String Quartet in F# Minor

The String Quartet in F# Minor is a work in four movements. The unusual key of F# Minor gives the piece a particular timbre, which makes a refreshing change for players regularly playing in D or G, though it does present a challenge.

An allegro risoluto commences the work, using strong interweaving passages of two against three. A lively scherzo or giga follows in F# major. Then comes a haunting elegy (adagio) in F# minor.  A glittering presto follows in A major, with a brief return to the elegiac melody, before finishing with a flourish. Throughout, the piece is approachable and tuneful. It is approx. 22 mins. in duration. The first performance was given on 19th. October, 2015 in New Malden, Surrey.
