Six Towns
is a
musical portrait
of the “potteries” for four clarinets, representing the original six
towns that form the conurbation of Stoke-on-Trent. Each portrait is
characterised by its history or geographical situation. For example,
the bustling centre of Hanley is contrasted with Tunstall,
the northern gateway to the countryside, the remnants of pottery
buildings acting as a foil to the birdsong not too far away.
Longton is the southern gateway to the conurbation, whilst
Stoke is at its hub. Fenton, the often forgotten sixth
town, emerges out of a fog to claim its rightful place and
Burslem has a serenity all of its own with the gentle turn of
the potter's wheel from the few remaining pottery manufactures.
Six Towns is unashamedly programme music. The scoring for four
clarinets is a scarce format but one that the composer hopes brings
a refreshing look at six interesting locations.
The work is
approachable, ranging from Elementary to Intermediate in standard
and is approx. 18 minutes 30 in duration, without interval pauses. |
